Layered Haircuts in Amsterdam: Find Your Shape

BY PARIS NGUYEN

Look at the four cuts in this article and you will see one idea done four ways. A golden blonde with a full, wispy fringe and layers that flick out around the collarbone. A long brunette with a short, graphic fringe and length that falls in soft, rounded tiers. A butterfly-style cut swept back from the face in big feathered sections. A shaggier shape, leaning towards a wolf cut, with an airy fringe and movement through the mid-lengths. Every one of them is a layered cut, and no two look the same.

That is the point. Our name, ASSORT, comes from the word assortment, a mix of many kinds. Behind it is a Japanese saying: ten people, ten colours. Ten clients means ten different hair designs, so we have no single house style to push on anyone. Layering is where that idea is easiest to see. The same technique can add lift, take out weight, frame a face or bring in texture, depending on where and how we cut.

What is a layered cut?

A layered cut is hair cut to different lengths instead of one straight line. Shorter pieces sit over longer ones, so the hair stops hanging as one heavy curtain and starts to move. Layers can be barely there, a few long tiers to take bulk out of thick hair. They can also be the whole design, as in a shag, where short layers at the crown give height and texture all over.

Most trend cuts you have seen are layered cuts with a name. A butterfly cut keeps the length but adds shorter layers around the face and crown, so the hair looks shorter and fuller when styled and long when it is down. A wolf cut sits between a shag and a mullet: choppier, more texture on top, wispier towards the ends. Face-framing layers are the gentlest version, just a few shorter pieces at the front that open the face up. A fringe pulls any of these together.

Why now

Layers and fringes are being worn together right now. The fringe might be curtain, wispy or short and blunt, and it blends into face-framing pieces so the front of the cut works as one shape. That suits life in Amsterdam well. Between the damp canal air, sudden rain and the wind on a bike ride along the Prinsengracht, a sleek, one-length blow-dry rarely lasts the day. A cut built around movement looks right even after the weather has had its go, because it was meant to move to begin with.

The process

Every layered cut starts with a conversation. We want to know how you actually wear your hair. Do you air-dry or blow-dry? Do you tie it back for work? Where does your parting want to sit? We look at your natural texture, your density and how your hair falls. Those things decide where the layers should go more than any reference photo can. If you want to talk it through before committing, a Consultation is EUR 30, and we waive it when you book a service.

Placement sets the character of the cut. A shortest layer at the cheekbone gives a very different face shape than one at the jaw or collarbone. The fringe is a choice of its own. The short, defined fringe on the long brunette cut here makes a bold statement. The soft, see-through fringe on the blonde cut melts into the layers around it. We finish with a blow-dry and show you how to get the shape back at home.

What to book

For a new layered shape, book a Stylist Cut, EUR 70, with shampoo and blow-dry included. Our long and thick hair surcharge does not apply to cuts, so the price is the same whether your hair sits at the shoulder or reaches mid-back.

Between full cuts, fringes and face-framing pieces tend to need attention first. A Bang / Fringe Cut, a trim of about 3cm, is EUR 20. A Bang Cut + Face Framing, also about 3cm, is EUR 40 and keeps the front of the cut sharp while the length grows. If you just want your layers styled for an evening out, a Shampoo & Blow Dry is EUR 50.

Make it yours

Layers reward a little attention at the front. Rough-dry until the hair is mostly dry, then use a round brush or your fingers to direct the face-framing pieces away from your face. That is where the butterfly-style flick comes from. For a shaggier or wolf-leaning cut, scrunch it lightly and let it air-dry for more texture. Put any styling product through the mid-lengths and ends, not the roots, so the top keeps its lift. We can talk you through our own line, from Assort Multi Oil Light to Assort Hair Cream, and help you pick what suits your texture.

Layers also work well with colour, because tones show where the layers break. If you would like to pair a new cut with colour, mention it during your consultation and we will plan the two together.
