Bixie Cut in Amsterdam: The Bob–Pixie Hybrid
BY PARIS NGUYENA curly fringe falling just above the brows. A short, stacked nape with long pieces left loose around the ear. Soft, wispy layers flicking forward past the cheekbone. Three different heads of hair, and all three are the same cut: the Bixie. It is the short haircut we are asked about most right now, so here is what it is, how we cut it, and how to book one at our salon on Kerkstraat.
What is a Bixie cut?
The name gives it away: a Bixie is part bob, part pixie. It is longer and softer than a classic pixie, with enough length to tuck behind an ear, sweep to the side or wear as a fringe. It is also shorter and more layered than a bob, so it doesn't sit in one heavy line around the jaw. Most of the length stays around the top and the face. The back and nape are kept short and tidy, and the layers in between give it movement.
It isn't one fixed shape. On curly hair the layers let each curl sit where it falls naturally, so you get a full, rounded shape with a curly fringe. On straight or wavy hair the same idea gives a piecey, lived-in finish. The first photo shows the curly version: short at the sides, with soft curls framing the face and a fringe that doesn't need to be perfectly neat.

Why the Bixie, why now
The Bixie is a trend because it sits between two cuts people have long loved and avoids the main problem of each. A pixie can feel like too big a jump if you are coming from longer hair. A bob can feel heavy and flat, and it can take a lot of styling to keep it in shape. The Bixie keeps the lightness of a pixie and the softness of a bob, which makes going short feel less risky and more flexible.
It also suits life in Amsterdam. Wind on the bike, drizzle on the walk across the canals and damp air for much of the year are hard on a cut that only works when it is perfectly blow-dried. A layered shape that is meant to look a little undone holds up much better. When the wind messes it up, it still looks like a Bixie.
The process
Every Bixie starts with a conversation. We look at your hair's natural texture, how it grows at the crown and nape, where your cowlicks are, and how much time you actually want to spend styling in the morning. Bring reference photos if you have them. They help us understand whether you want something closer to a pixie or closer to a bob, because the Bixie covers everything in between.
From there we build the shape from the back. The nape is kept short and close so the head has a clean outline from behind. The layers then get longer as they move up towards the crown, which gives the cut its lift and its soft, stacked look. The second photo shows that back view: a short, tidy nape, plenty of movement through the crown, and longer pieces left around the ear so the outline stays soft rather than severe.

Next comes the front: the fringe and the face-framing pieces that make a Bixie look like a Bixie and not a grown-out pixie. We decide together how long the fringe should be, how much it should hide or show your brows, and whether the side pieces should brush the cheekbone or sit behind the ear. We finish with a blow-dry and show you how to recreate the texture at home.
What to book
A Bixie is booked as our Stylist Cut, which is EUR 70 and includes a shampoo and blow-dry. If you are going from long hair to short and want to talk it through before committing, a Consultation is EUR 30, and it is waived when you book a service.
Short cuts lose their shape faster than long ones, especially around the fringe. To keep the front sharp between full cuts, a Bang / Fringe Cut (about 3cm) is EUR 20. If you also want the face-framing pieces refreshed, Bang Cut + Face Framing (about 3cm) is EUR 40.
Make it yours
Our name, ASSORT, comes from assortment, and the idea behind it is 十人十色: ten people, ten colours. Ten clients means ten different designs, and that fits the Bixie well. The third photo shows a straighter, brown version from the side: a long, wispy fringe sweeping across the eye, light layers that flick out around the ear, and length left at the nape, which gives it a slightly shaggier outline than the cropped back in the second photo. It's still a Bixie, just made for a different person.

You can make yours softer or sharper, curlier or sleeker, shorter at the nape or longer around the face. Tell us how you wear your hair on an ordinary weekday, not just on your best day, and we will shape the cut around that. If you would like a hand with styling, ask us to show you which product from the Assort line suits your texture.
