Yellow to Purple Gradient Hair Colour in Amsterdam

BY PARIS NGUYEN

The transformation

Our guest came in with grown-out blonde: dark regrowth along the parting, and the last of an old colour fading to a soft mint green through the ends. It was a good base, just a tired one. The plan was the opposite of tired: a full sunset, melting from yellow at the top into pink and then deep purple at the tips.

We did it as a Double Process Creative. A lightening step evened out the regrowth and lifted the base clean enough for vivid shades to show true, and then the creative colour went on by hand. Yellow sits at the root and through the fringe, warms into peach and pink through the mid-lengths, and deepens into violet and indigo at the ends. We melted the shades into each other instead of laying them in hard bands, so every layer shows a different part of the gradient as the hair moves.

Lightening over hair that has already been blonded asks a lot of it, so we protected the hair with the K18 bond-building treatment (@k18hair).

From the front, the finished look tells the story best. A pale blonde fringe is striped with sunflower yellow, flashes of pink and orange catch the light through the face-framing pieces, and purple gathers at the shoulders. Even a grey afternoon on the canals doesn't dull it. ASSORT comes from the word assortment, and this is what we mean by it: ten people, ten colours. No two gradients we paint come out the same.
