Rainbow Hair Colour in Amsterdam: Vivid Double Process

BY PARIS NGUYEN

The transformation

It started with a pale, buttery blonde: a shaggy, mullet-shaped cut with a heavy fringe, wispy lengths past the shoulders and dark roots growing through at the crown. It was a strong look already. The brief for this visit was simple and loud: loads of colour, rainbow style.

Portrait of a person with a shaggy, wavy mullet-style cut in bleached platinum blonde with a slight green-yellow tone and darker roots, worn with face piercings, tattoos and a black graphic band-style tee against a plain white wall. Well lit and in focus; an edgy finished-look shot suited for a carousel after photo. Before

We built it as a double process colour. First we lightened to get a clean, even base all the way through. Then we painted vivids section by section so the shades melt into each other instead of sitting in stripes. Fiery red and orange pick up the crown and fringe. Hot pink runs through the mid-lengths around the face. Underneath and towards the ends, the colour moves into green with deep blue tones. Because lightening was part of the process, we protected the hair with the K18 bond-building treatment, @k18hair, so the base stayed strong enough to carry that much pigment.

The finishing touch was a shaved side with a small heart cut in. It's a quiet detail that shows when the hair is tucked behind the ear or swept to one side, and a playful contrast to all that colour.

Vivid shades fade faster than natural tones, especially through a damp Amsterdam winter and a lot of time spent outdoors on the bike. To keep them bright for longer, wash less often, rinse in cool water and keep heat styling low. When the reds and pinks start to soften, a toning or refresh visit brings them back without starting over.

Our name comes from "assortment", and the idea behind it is ten people, ten colours. No two rainbows we make look the same, and this one was built around this guest's cut, style and attitude.
